Kissimmee & Celebration

Orlando's affordable front porch to the parks: motels and pancake houses strung along Highway 192, sprawling vacation homes with private pools, airboats skimming the lakes, and Disney's own storybook town just up the road.

ORLANDOKISSIMMEE · FL

If Orlando's theme parks are the show, Kissimmee is the green room. This is the value side of town: a long, neon-lit stretch of Highway 192 lined with motels, mini-golf, pancake houses and pool-home neighborhoods, all of it sitting just a few miles south of the Walt Disney World gates. You can wake up in a four-bedroom house with a screened pool and be parked at a park entrance before the rope drops.

It's built for families and groups who want space and a softer price than the resort bubble, plus a slice of real Central Florida ranch-and-lake country at the edges. Bunk here, spend your days at the theme parks, and save an evening or two for the airboats and for Celebration, the pastel town Disney designed and then let grow up. Looking for a base? THE STRIP · HWY 192 / IRLO BRONSON

Old Town & Highway 192

Highway 192 (Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway) is the off-property tourist spine, a few miles of hotels, restaurants and roadside fun. Its anchor is Old Town, an open-air district of specialty shops, eateries and carnival rides — a Ferris wheel, a coaster, a tall drop tower — that's free to walk into, with rides priced separately. Friday and Saturday classic-car cruises are a long-running tradition; check the current event calendar before you head over.

VACATION HOMES · WEST KISSIMMEE

Reunion, ChampionsGate & pool-home country

West Kissimmee is the capital of the Orlando vacation home. Gated communities like Reunion Resort, ChampionsGate, Windsor Hills, Storey Lake and Solterra rent out everything from three-bedroom condos to enormous themed villas, most with a private screened pool and shared water parks and golf. Reunion sits only about six miles from Walt Disney World, so a big group can spread out and still be first in line.

How close it is to Disney

This is the whole point of basing here. Depending on exactly where you stay, the Walt Disney World entrances are roughly five to fifteen miles up the road, about ten to twenty-five minutes in normal traffic. Universal and SeaWorld are a little farther but still an easy drive. You trade a short morning commute for more room and a friendlier nightly rate.

Airboat rides on the lakes

Kissimmee sits on the edge of a chain of wild lakes and marsh, and an airboat is the fastest way into it. Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures runs day, sunset and night tours that skim the wetlands at speed, with a good chance of spotting alligators, wading birds and turtles along the way. It's the most authentic hour of your trip and a fine break from the queues.

THE TOWN DISNEY BUILT · CELEBRATION

Downtown Celebration

Just off World Drive, Celebration is the master-planned town Disney designed in the 1990s and modeled on a pre-war American main street. The company has long since stepped back, but the pastel storefronts, the rocking chairs and the interactive fountain on Lake Rianhard remain. Park once and stroll Market Street, browse the shops, and grab a Kilwins cone or dinner at the Columbia by the water.

Free to stroll
Getting around: Kissimmee is spread out and built for the car — 192 is wide, fast and dotted with traffic lights, so budget a little extra time and watch for left-turn lanes. A few resorts run Disney shuttles, but a rental car gives you the freedom to mix park days with the airboats and Celebration. In summer, plan outdoor stops for the morning; afternoon thunderstorms roll through almost daily from June into the fall.

Common questions

Where are Kissimmee and Celebration?

Both sit in Osceola County, just south of the Walt Disney World Resort in Central Florida. Kissimmee is the value-priced visitor area along Highway 192 (Irlo Bronson Memorial Highway), and Celebration is a master-planned town tucked beside Disney property a short drive away. Neither is on a beach — Orlando is inland, with the nearest coasts about an hour or more away as day trips.

How far is Kissimmee from Walt Disney World?

Very close. Depending on exactly where you stay, the Disney park entrances are roughly five to fifteen miles up the road, which is about ten to twenty-five minutes in normal traffic. That short commute is the main reason families and groups base in Kissimmee instead of paying resort prices on Disney property.

Is staying in a Kissimmee vacation home worth it?

For families and larger groups, often yes. Communities like Reunion, ChampionsGate, Windsor Hills, Storey Lake and Solterra rent multi-bedroom homes and condos, many with a private pool, full kitchen and shared amenities, usually for less per person than several hotel rooms. The trade-off is that you'll want a rental car, since these neighborhoods are spread out around the parks.

What is there to do in Celebration, Florida?

Celebration's downtown is free to stroll: walk Market Street's pastel storefronts, relax by the interactive fountain on Lake Rianhard, browse the shops, and eat at lakeside spots like the Columbia Restaurant or grab a treat at Kilwins. Disney designed the town in the 1990s but no longer runs it; the small-town look and feel remain.

Can you ride an airboat near Kissimmee?

Yes. Kissimmee sits on a chain of wild lakes and marshland, and operators such as Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures run day, sunset and night tours that skim the wetlands at speed. You've got a good chance of seeing alligators, wading birds and turtles, and it's an easy half-day break from the theme parks.

Is Old Town in Kissimmee free?

Old Town is an open-air entertainment district on Highway 192 that's free to walk into, with free parking; you only pay for the amusement rides, food and shopping. It has specialty shops, restaurants and a midway with a Ferris wheel and coaster, plus long-running weekend classic-car cruises. Check the current calendar for ride hours and events before you go.
