Universal Orlando Resort
Four theme parks, a water park, and a free dining-and-music district — Universal is Orlando's roller-coaster heart, now anchored by the brand-new Epic Universe.
Updated June 2026
If Walt Disney World is the kingdom across town, Universal Orlando is the thrill machine — denser, edgier, and aimed squarely at anyone who likes their rides to put a little wind in their hair. It's a cluster of parks, hotels and a free entertainment strip just off Universal Boulevard, a few minutes north of the International Drive bustle, and in 2025 it grew a whole new park.
It suits big kids, thrill-seekers, movie buffs and Harry Potter devotees especially well, though there's plenty for little ones too. The smart move is to treat it as a multi-day resort rather than a single-park day-trip. If you're trying to choose between the big two, our wider Theme Parks guide lays out the lineup, and the splashy new fourth gate gets its own deep dive on our Epic Universe page.
The four parks & the water park
Three theme parks plus Epic Universe, a tropical water park, and the free district that ties it all together.
The Wizarding World, in two parks
Harry Potter's world is split across the two original gates — and the train between them is half the magic.
A perfect Universal day
If you've got one full day, lean into the Wizarding World and the train; if you've got two, fold in Epic Universe.
- Arrive early and head straight to Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure before the lines build.
- Ride the coasters and the marquee rides through the morning, then board the Hogwarts Express to cross over.
- Spend the afternoon exploring Diagon Alley in Universal Studios Florida — butterbeer required.
- Beat the worst of the afternoon heat with an indoor show, or duck out to Volcano Bay if you have a multi-park ticket.
- End at CityWalk for dinner and live music — no ticket needed, so it's an easy wind-down even on a rest day.

Common questions
How many parks are at Universal Orlando Resort?
There are four theme parks — Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and the new Epic Universe (which opened in May 2025) — plus the Volcano Bay water park. CityWalk, the dining and entertainment district, is free to enter and connects the original two parks. Most visitors give the resort two to four days.
Do I need a park-to-park ticket for the Hogwarts Express?
Yes. The Hogwarts Express runs between Diagon Alley in Universal Studios Florida and Hogsmeade in Islands of Adventure, so riding it means crossing parks. You need a park-to-park ticket to board, even if the Wizarding World is the only thing you plan to see. A single-park ticket won't let you ride.
Is Epic Universe open, and is it part of the same resort?
Epic Universe opened in May 2025 as Universal Orlando's fourth and largest theme park, on its own campus a short distance south of the original parks. It requires its own park admission and is themed around five worlds, including Super Nintendo World and a new wing of the Wizarding World. Check the official site for current hours and ticket details.
Which Universal hotels include the Express Pass?
Three on-site signature hotels — Loews Portofino Bay, Hard Rock Hotel and Loews Royal Pacific — include a free Universal Express Pass for guests at the two original parks (Universal Studios Florida and Islands of Adventure). The newer on-site hotels generally don't include it, and the Express Pass for Epic Universe must be purchased separately. Verify current perks when you book.
Can you visit CityWalk without a park ticket?
Yes. CityWalk is free to enter, so you can dine, shop, catch live music or see a movie without buying a theme-park ticket. Parking fees may apply during the day, though evening parking is often discounted or free after a certain hour. It's an easy no-ticket evening at Universal.
When is the best time to visit Universal Orlando?
The mild, dry winter months (roughly November through April) are the most comfortable but also the busiest and priciest. Summer is hot and humid with near-daily afternoon thunderstorms, and Florida's hurricane season runs June through November. Weekdays and the shoulder seasons tend to mean shorter lines than holidays and weekends.
